What you don't see CAN hurt you!

One of the purposes of this blog is to show that it is not only the images you see but also images you don't see that create the word.

I'd like to undermine that.

For example sometime this month I'm going to challenge you all (all two or three of you) to come up with a hundred images to describe the 20th century. But here are the big guns. After that in september I'm going to post an alternative 100, that tell other stories, other moments important to history in the 20th century that we can not grasp with our current understanding. It will stretch my mind. It will stretch yours.

It will show us that we should know the images for the words we speak, but also the images we do not. That way we can communicate. And only then can we all begin to be on the same page.

Another Word.

Heres a word that should start your mind rolling : GOOD.

Dimensions

Just like images, each word has dimensions.

Dimensions of size, shape and colour. Shape is usually the only thing we see. Shape is the definition of the word. Plain and simple. While colour is the feeling or emotion that the word induces and size is the granduer we either give or take away from it.

For instance technicly the words nerd and intellectual are the same shape. Yet they have different sizes. The word nerd is belittling while the word intellectual has granduer.

Also the words manipulate and influence are the same shape, yet different colours. I can imagine the word manipulate coloured a fiery red where as the word influence would be a powerful blue. One word is despised and the other adored.

This Weeks Word

Drumroll please, the best drumroll possible...

Freeze. Wait a sec. The best? Hmmm.... How exactly is that measured anyway?

How can you say what the greatest thing is? Well, you really can't reasonably say. Why? Because greatness is all in your head. Or rather greatness involves the images that flood your mind.

So here it is , our fourth (maybe fifth) word : Greatness.

Any images come to mind?

A little explanation

Well, some of you may be wondering what exactly the end goal of this blog actually is.

Well, here's the deal. Each week I'll post two words, and with each of the words post your own thought-images along with them. It's an interesting experiment. At the end of each month I'll post an album per word with all the best pictures. You'll see, for example, how words like Humanity or America have image connotations which can drastically effect or differ from the word-only definitions.

The point of this blog once again is to show how Images are worth many words, and words many images. That the way we communicate is a lot more complex than we first understood it to be.

The First Word

Today's word: America.

That's it.

Post any image that comes to mind, of course extreme ones will not appear, but let your mind flow.

What images make up that word?

A thousand images

I hold this truth to be self-evident: that all though a picture is worth a thousand words a word is worth a thousand pictures. It's true! I will post words on this Blog and you post the pictures that come to mind with them. It's an experiment extraordinaire!
